What LOLER actually is

LOLER stands for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 — the law that requires your lift to be thoroughly examined by a competent person. Passenger lifts are normally thoroughly examined at least every six months, unless an appropriate written examination scheme drawn up by a competent person specifies a different interval. The purpose is to identify safety issues early and make sure they are dealt with appropriately — not to make compliance more complicated than it needs to be.

  • The statutory examination — carried out by a competent person, at the legal interval that applies to your lift.
  • Explaining your report — we read it with you and translate the findings into plain English.
  • Interpreting the recommendations — we help you understand which items genuinely need action, and why.
  • The remedial work — where appropriate, we can carry out the repairs identified in the report.

Common questions

What happens if the report identifies a problem?

That depends on what has been identified. Some defects may require immediate action, while others may need to be rectified within a specified period. We can help explain the report and discuss any remedial work required.

Is it illegal to keep using it?

It depends on what’s been found. We’ll tell you plainly if there’s an immediate safety concern rather than leaving you to guess.

How often is an inspection legally required?

Passenger lifts are normally thoroughly examined at least every six months under LOLER 1998, unless an appropriate written examination scheme drawn up by a competent person specifies a different interval for your equipment.
